NATIONAL CONSTITUTIONAL IDENTITY AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF SHARED SOCIETY

Abstract

This article explores the role of national constitutional identity with its core values and principles in building shared society. One part of these values has universalist meaning and are widely accepted among the free societies (personal dignity and freedom, the rule of law, welfare state). Other part is of more specific national origin, it is a function of the process of culture-historical formation of the nation (recognition of official language, of traditional religion, of national unity). These values and principles are at the core of national constitutional identity which is to be protected in the European integration process.
